At the Vascular Birthmark Center in New York, NY, we understand how vital it is for parents to grasp the nuances of their child’s health conditions. One question that may arise is whether psoriasis can affect a child’s birthmark. Our specialists explain the relationship between psoriasis and various types of birthmarks and offer insights and support for families dealing with these concerns.

What Is Psoriasis?

The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases of the NIH defines psoriasis as “a chronic (long-lasting) disease in which the immune system becomes overactive, causing skin cells to multiply too quickly.” It leads to thick, red scaly patches that can be itchy and sometimes painful. While psoriasis can occur on any part of the body, it often appears on the elbows, knees, scalp and lower back.

The condition manifests differently in children compared to adults; pediatric psoriasis may include patches that are smaller and more scaly and can sometimes present as diaper dermatitis in infants.

Interestingly, psoriasis is not just a cosmetic issue—it can significantly impact a child’s quality of life, self-esteem, and emotional well-being. The 2023 Paediatric Drugs journal indicates that approximately 1-3% of the general population may be affected by psoriasis, and one-third of all patients develop symptoms in childhood and adolescence.

Understanding Birthmarks

Birthmarks are congenital lesions on the skin that can vary in color, shape and size. They are generally divided into two categories: vascular birthmarks, such as hemangiomas and port-wine stains, and pigmented birthmarks, such as moles and café-au-lait spots. Vascular birthmarks occur due to abnormal blood vessel formation, while pigmented birthmarks result from clusters of pigment cells.

At the Vascular Birthmark Center, we specialize in understanding and treating vascular birthmarks, ensuring that children receive the best possible care, including accurate diagnosis and effective treatments.

Can Psoriasis Affect My Child’s Birthmark?

The interaction between psoriasis and birthmarks can be complex. Here are key points to consider:

Psoriasis and Vascular Birthmarks

Vascular birthmarks can sometimes change appearance in children with psoriasis. For instance, areas with a vascular malformation might become more inflamed or irritated if psoriasis occurs in parallel. The ongoing inflammation from psoriasis can impact the way that vascular birthmarks manifest, potentially leading to irritation or exacerbation of symptoms in some cases. The December 2024 Clinical Case Reports journal examined this and determined that “the development of psoriatic plaques within vascular malformations is possible, although it cannot be considered common.”

Pigmented Birthmarks and Psoriasis

While psoriasis is primarily a skin inflammatory condition, it generally does not affect pigmented birthmarks. However, if a child with a pigmented birthmark develops psoriasis nearby, the inflammatory response could potentially change the texture or appearance of the skin around the birthmark, leading to concerns. It’s important to monitor any changes closely and discuss them with a healthcare provider or birthmark specialist.

How We Can Help

At the Vascular Birthmark Center, our mission is clear: we provide the best care possible for children and adults with vascular birthmarks. We understand that knowledge is power. Therefore, our team spends ample time with each patient and their family to explain their condition, expected outcomes, and treatment options.

Treatment for psoriasis often includes topical treatments, phototherapy and sometimes systemic medications. If psoriasis is impacting a child’s vascular birthmark, dermatologists at our center may recommend a tailored treatment strategy to address both conditions simultaneously while ensuring the child’s comfort and well-being.

FAQs for Psoriasis and Birthmarks

Can birthmarks change if my child develops psoriasis?

Yes, particularly with vascular birthmarks. Changes in inflammation or skin condition may influence their appearance. It’s essential to consult a birthmark specialist for evaluation and tailored advice.

Is psoriasis hereditary?

Psoriasis can run in families, but it is not directly inherited. Environmental factors, in combination with genetic predispositions, contribute to its development.

How can I support my child with psoriasis?

Education is key. Teach your child about their condition, encourage self-care and foster open communication about their feelings. Encouraging a stable routine for skin care and seeking treatment from specialized healthcare professionals can also be very helpful.

What should I do if I notice changes in my child’s birthmark?

It’s essential to consult a dermatologist or a specialist at the Vascular Birthmark Center for evaluation to determine if further treatment or observation is required.

Dr. Levitin is very knowledgeable, compassionate and professional. Five years ago, I needed to find information about a birth mark that my newborn daughter started to grow a couple days after birth. I was afraid, I did not feel like I got any clear information about it through my insurance; also, they did not offer any course of treatment for it. I started to look for information, the birthmark was growing each day, information was scarce and I just got more scared. Finally, I found a video in Youtube from a grandmother who was very grateful after finding treatment for her grand daughter through The Birthmark Foundation. It was a huge blessing to me and my family. I found Dr. Levitin, I contacted him thinking he probably would not even answer. I was wrong, he kindly answered promptly, got in touch with me and soon he had a plan : ) I went to see him at the Birthmark Center in Los Angeles. He explained everything in a way that it was so clear to understand, no question I made was insignificant and his answers were each very informative. I really never have had an experience with a doctor who explains and speaks in such a way. I left his office knowing that my daughter was in the best hands and the best care. I first thank God for the Birthmark Foundation, a great organization with the highest quality of doctors. Also, a very special thanks to Dr. Levitin for all his help and kindness, for listening to my concerns and answering each and every question. And last, but no least, to the Birthmark Foundation Center in Los Angeles : ) I hope many children can find help/care in this place as I found it for my daughter. Thank you forever.

we are forever grateful for Dr. Levitin. My daughter Lena had surgery to remove her hemangioma that was located on her forehead at just 6 month old. she healed beautifully and we couldn't be happier with how minimal her scar is, even almost 4.5 years later. Dr. Levitin is caring, compassionate, and such a great doctor/surgeon overall. He had our daughter's best interest and I knew she was in good hands. I highly recommend him any chance I get!

My name is Chris and I was recently treated for an AVM on my forehead by Dr. Gregory Levitin of New York (New York Eye and Ear Infirmary). Thankfully, I live within a few hours of NYC. In brief, I would like to say that Dr. Levitin is very capable doctor with a lot of experience with AVMs. He responds quickly to e-mail, texts, and phone calls. He accepts insurance. He takes a "team approach" and will be your "QB" and involve other specialists as necessary. In my particular case they were Dr. Raj Shrivastava (Mt Sinai) and Dr. Raphael A. Ortiz (Lenox Hill) in NY. I recommend contacting Dr Levitin for a consultation if you suspect you have an AVM. All 3 Drs are just good people. When I spoke to them, they treated me like like an equal. I felt like they were advising me as a close friend or family member. Like many that suffer with AVMs I was at first mis-diagnosed. What was thought to be a just a simple cyst turned out to be an AVM. Surgery to remove the cyst made the AVM about 5x bigger. My treatment entailed a few MRIs and CAT scans to determine what was going on and the treatment plan. This was followed by consultation with the 3 Drs mentioned above and finally a 2-day procedure. On day 1 Dr Ortiz embolized the AVM. On day 2 Dr Levitin and Dr Shrivastava removed the AVM from my skull and put some metal mesh there to fill the "hole". It has been 6-months since the surgery and so far I have not had any recurrence. In honor of Vascular Birthmark Awareness Day and to thank these Drs for all they have done for me, I just want to give everyone a solid reference. Finding the right doctor for this type of stuff makes all the difference.
