Birthmarks are a normal part of life for millions of people. While most are harmless, some may require special care, especially if they are large, raised, in sensitive areas or undergoing medical treatment. Whether you’re an adult with a birthmark or the parent of a child with one, knowing how and when to protect a birthmark is essential for long-term skin health and comfort.

The Vascular Birthmark Center, with world-renowned locations in New York and Los Angeles, offers expert advice on protecting birthmarks in various scenarios—ensuring you or your child can lead an active, confident life.

Understanding Birthmarks: Why Protection Matters

Birthmarks can be vascular (involving blood vessels), pigmented (involving skin color) or a combination. Some remain flat and fade over time, while others may thicken, become raised or change appearance. Certain birthmarks can be prone to irritation, bleeding or infection, particularly if they are located in high-friction areas or have been treated medically. Protection is important to:

  • Prevent injury or trauma
  • Reduce risk of infection
  • Minimize irritation from sun, friction, or chemicals
  • Support healing after treatment

How to Protect a Birthmark: Everyday Situations & Special Scenarios

1. During Sports and Physical Activity

Physical activities can increase the risk of trauma or irritation to a birthmark, especially if it’s raised, vascular or in a location prone to bumps and scrapes (like knees, elbows or face).

Tips:

  • Use soft, non-adherent bandages for protection during contact sports.
  • For larger or sensitive birthmarks, consider padded coverings or protective athletic sleeves.
  • Make sure the skin is clean and dry before applying any covering to prevent trapped moisture and irritation.
  • Avoid adhesive bandages if the birthmark is delicate or healing from a recent procedure.

2. In the Sun

Sun exposure can cause some birthmarks to darken, become irritated or increase the risk of skin cancer (especially for certain pigmented birthmarks). Sun protection is crucial!

Tips:

  • Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, reapplying every two hours and after swimming/sweating.
  • Use physical barriers, such as wide-brimmed hats, clothing or UV-protective sleeves, especially for children.
  • Avoid peak sun hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) when possible.
  • For recently treated birthmarks, follow your doctor’s advice—sometimes, direct sun should be avoided entirely for weeks.

3. During or After Laser or Medical Treatments

Procedures such as laser therapy, surgery or topical medications can make the skin around a birthmark especially sensitive and vulnerable.

Tips:

  • Follow all post-procedure care instructions from your specialist at The Vascular Birthmark Center.
  • Keep the area clean and dry; use only recommended gentle cleansers.
  • Apply any prescribed ointments or dressings exactly as directed.
  • Do not pick at scabs or peeling skin.
  • Avoid swimming (especially in pools or lakes) until the area is fully healed to reduce infection risk.
  • Protect the treated site from the sun until completely healed.

4. In Daily Life: Clothing, Friction, and Irritants

Some birthmarks are in areas that rub against clothing, diapers or jewelry, which can cause irritation.

Tips:

  • Choose soft, loose-fitting clothing made of natural, breathable fabrics.
  • Avoid rough seams or tags that may rub against the birthmark.
  • Change diapers frequently for babies with birthmarks in the diaper area.
  • For facial birthmarks, avoid harsh cosmetics or skin care products.

Protecting Birthmarks FAQ

1. Can I use regular sunscreen on a birthmark?
Yes, most birthmarks can be protected with regular sunscreen. However, if the skin is healing from a procedure, ask your specialist if a mineral-based sunscreen is preferred.

2. Should I cover my child’s birthmark with a bandage every day?
Not usually—constant covering can trap moisture and irritate the skin. Reserve bandages for times when extra protection is needed, such as during sports or rough activities.

3. Are birthmarks more likely to get infected?
Some, especially if raised, ulcerated or recently treated, can be more prone to infection. Keep the area clean, monitor for signs of infection (redness, swelling or pus), and consult a specialist if concerned.

4. How soon can my child return to sports after laser treatment?
This varies by treatment and birthmark type. Always follow your provider’s post-procedure instructions. Generally, wait until all scabbing is gone and the skin looks healed.

5. What products should I avoid on a birthmark?
Steer clear of harsh cleansers, exfoliants and scented lotions—especially on sensitive or healing birthmarks. Always patch-test new products and consult your provider for recommendations.

Dr. Levitin is very knowledgeable, compassionate and professional. Five years ago, I needed to find information about a birth mark that my newborn daughter started to grow a couple days after birth. I was afraid, I did not feel like I got any clear information about it through my insurance; also, they did not offer any course of treatment for it. I started to look for information, the birthmark was growing each day, information was scarce and I just got more scared. Finally, I found a video in Youtube from a grandmother who was very grateful after finding treatment for her grand daughter through The Birthmark Foundation. It was a huge blessing to me and my family. I found Dr. Levitin, I contacted him thinking he probably would not even answer. I was wrong, he kindly answered promptly, got in touch with me and soon he had a plan : ) I went to see him at the Birthmark Center in Los Angeles. He explained everything in a way that it was so clear to understand, no question I made was insignificant and his answers were each very informative. I really never have had an experience with a doctor who explains and speaks in such a way. I left his office knowing that my daughter was in the best hands and the best care. I first thank God for the Birthmark Foundation, a great organization with the highest quality of doctors. Also, a very special thanks to Dr. Levitin for all his help and kindness, for listening to my concerns and answering each and every question. And last, but no least, to the Birthmark Foundation Center in Los Angeles : ) I hope many children can find help/care in this place as I found it for my daughter. Thank you forever.

we are forever grateful for Dr. Levitin. My daughter Lena had surgery to remove her hemangioma that was located on her forehead at just 6 month old. she healed beautifully and we couldn't be happier with how minimal her scar is, even almost 4.5 years later. Dr. Levitin is caring, compassionate, and such a great doctor/surgeon overall. He had our daughter's best interest and I knew she was in good hands. I highly recommend him any chance I get!

My name is Chris and I was recently treated for an AVM on my forehead by Dr. Gregory Levitin of New York (New York Eye and Ear Infirmary). Thankfully, I live within a few hours of NYC. In brief, I would like to say that Dr. Levitin is very capable doctor with a lot of experience with AVMs. He responds quickly to e-mail, texts, and phone calls. He accepts insurance. He takes a "team approach" and will be your "QB" and involve other specialists as necessary. In my particular case they were Dr. Raj Shrivastava (Mt Sinai) and Dr. Raphael A. Ortiz (Lenox Hill) in NY. I recommend contacting Dr Levitin for a consultation if you suspect you have an AVM. All 3 Drs are just good people. When I spoke to them, they treated me like like an equal. I felt like they were advising me as a close friend or family member. Like many that suffer with AVMs I was at first mis-diagnosed. What was thought to be a just a simple cyst turned out to be an AVM. Surgery to remove the cyst made the AVM about 5x bigger. My treatment entailed a few MRIs and CAT scans to determine what was going on and the treatment plan. This was followed by consultation with the 3 Drs mentioned above and finally a 2-day procedure. On day 1 Dr Ortiz embolized the AVM. On day 2 Dr Levitin and Dr Shrivastava removed the AVM from my skull and put some metal mesh there to fill the "hole". It has been 6-months since the surgery and so far I have not had any recurrence. In honor of Vascular Birthmark Awareness Day and to thank these Drs for all they have done for me, I just want to give everyone a solid reference. Finding the right doctor for this type of stuff makes all the difference.
