Deciding whether your child should participate in sports can be a challenging decision for parents, especially when a birthmark is involved. Birthmarks, especially vascular types such as hemangiomas and port-wine stains, can present unique considerations for physical activity. Parents need to understand how certain sports might impact their child’s health.

Understanding Birthmarks

Birthmarks are skin lesions that are present at birth or appear shortly after. They can vary significantly in appearance, type, and severity. While many birthmarks are harmless, others can require medical attention, particularly vascular birthmarks that affect deeper tissues and potentially underlying organs. Fortunately, the management of vascular birthmarks has advanced, allowing for safer treatment options.

How Certain Sports Could Affect Birthmarks

When considering sports for your child, it’s essential to evaluate both the type of birthmark and the nature of the sport. Here are some considerations regarding various sports:

Contact Sports

Sports like football, rugby and boxing involve significant physical contact. For children with certain vascular birthmarks, such as hemangiomas, impacts to the area can lead to bleeding or irritation. If a birthmark is located in an area prone to injury, it may pose a risk of complications.

Water Sports

Swimming is generally safe for children with birthmarks. However, some birthmarks may need to be protected from prolonged sun exposure, especially if they are on exposed areas like the back or shoulders. Use water-resistant sunscreen and consider UV-protective swimwear to minimize the risk of sunburn.

Endurance Sports

Running, cycling or activities like dancing can be beneficial for children with most types of birthmarks. Nonetheless, constant friction on certain birthmarks may cause irritation or discomfort.

Martial Arts

While many forms of martial arts teach discipline and can be safely practiced, the contact involved might increase the risk of trauma to a vascular birthmark. It’s essential to consult with a medical professional before allowing your child to participate.

Extreme Sports

Activities like skateboarding or rock climbing carry risks of falls and injuries. Ensure that any birthmark on the body is adequately protected, and consider whether the sport poses extreme risks to your child’s unique needs.

Safety Tips for Sports Participation

Ensuring the safety of your child with a birthmark while they engage in sports involves several strategies:

  1. Consultation: Always consult a healthcare provider or dermatologist before starting any sports activity. They can provide guidance based on the type and location of the birthmark.
  2. Protective Gear: Encourage your child to wear appropriate protective equipment to safeguard any affected areas during contact sports.
  3. Monitor Changes: Keep an eye on birthmark changes during physical activity; if there’s any increase in size, color change or unusual symptoms, consult a medical professional.
  4. Educate Coaches: Inform coaches and sports personnel about your child’s birthmark and any potential implications. This information will enable them to apply appropriate precautions.

FAQs About Children and Birthmarks

Can sports worsen a child’s birthmark?

Yes, certain types of physical impact, especially in contact sports, can irritate or damage a birthmark. It’s essential to assess the specific birthmark and consult with a doctor for personalized guidance.

Are all types of birthmarks safe for sports?

Most birthmarks do not pose significant issues, but it depends on their type and location on the body. Consultation with a healthcare provider is the most accurate way to receive advice.

What if my child has a birthmark that requires treatment?

If your child’s birthmark requires ongoing treatment, such as laser therapy, work closely with your child’s healthcare team to schedule treatments around sporting activities to avoid conflicts.

Are there sports best suited for children with birthmarks?

Non-contact sports like swimming, running or cycling may be ideal. Always ensure that protective measures are in place for any birthmarks that are susceptible to injury.

Is it safe for my child to participate in sports if they have a birthmark?

In general, yes, as long as precautions are taken and medical advice is followed. Most children with birthmarks can participate in a wide range of physical activities safely.

Dr. Levitin is very knowledgeable, compassionate and professional. Five years ago, I needed to find information about a birth mark that my newborn daughter started to grow a couple days after birth. I was afraid, I did not feel like I got any clear information about it through my insurance; also, they did not offer any course of treatment for it. I started to look for information, the birthmark was growing each day, information was scarce and I just got more scared. Finally, I found a video in Youtube from a grandmother who was very grateful after finding treatment for her grand daughter through The Birthmark Foundation. It was a huge blessing to me and my family. I found Dr. Levitin, I contacted him thinking he probably would not even answer. I was wrong, he kindly answered promptly, got in touch with me and soon he had a plan : ) I went to see him at the Birthmark Center in Los Angeles. He explained everything in a way that it was so clear to understand, no question I made was insignificant and his answers were each very informative. I really never have had an experience with a doctor who explains and speaks in such a way. I left his office knowing that my daughter was in the best hands and the best care. I first thank God for the Birthmark Foundation, a great organization with the highest quality of doctors. Also, a very special thanks to Dr. Levitin for all his help and kindness, for listening to my concerns and answering each and every question. And last, but no least, to the Birthmark Foundation Center in Los Angeles : ) I hope many children can find help/care in this place as I found it for my daughter. Thank you forever.

we are forever grateful for Dr. Levitin. My daughter Lena had surgery to remove her hemangioma that was located on her forehead at just 6 month old. she healed beautifully and we couldn't be happier with how minimal her scar is, even almost 4.5 years later. Dr. Levitin is caring, compassionate, and such a great doctor/surgeon overall. He had our daughter's best interest and I knew she was in good hands. I highly recommend him any chance I get!

Chris

My name is Chris and I was recently treated for an AVM on my forehead by Dr. Gregory Levitin of New York (New York Eye and Ear Infirmary). Thankfully, I live within a few hours of NYC. In brief, I would like to say that Dr. Levitin is very capable doctor with a lot of experience with AVMs. He responds quickly to e-mail, texts, and phone calls. He accepts insurance. He takes a "team approach" and will be your "QB" and involve other specialists as necessary. In my particular case they were Dr. Raj Shrivastava (Mt Sinai) and Dr. Raphael A. Ortiz (Lenox Hill) in NY. I recommend contacting Dr Levitin for a consultation if you suspect you have an AVM. All 3 Drs are just good people. When I spoke to them, they treated me like like an equal. I felt like they were advising me as a close friend or family member. Like many that suffer with AVMs I was at first mis-diagnosed. What was thought to be a just a simple cyst turned out to be an AVM. Surgery to remove the cyst made the AVM about 5x bigger. My treatment entailed a few MRIs and CAT scans to determine what was going on and the treatment plan. This was followed by consultation with the 3 Drs mentioned above and finally a 2-day procedure. On day 1 Dr Ortiz embolized the AVM. On day 2 Dr Levitin and Dr Shrivastava removed the AVM from my skull and put some metal mesh there to fill the "hole". It has been 6-months since the surgery and so far I have not had any recurrence. In honor of Vascular Birthmark Awareness Day and to thank these Drs for all they have done for me, I just want to give everyone a solid reference. Finding the right doctor for this type of stuff makes all the difference.
